In 3rd Grade, students are asked to become more independent and learn
to extend their thinking from concrete to abstract, as well as understanding a world beyond themselves and how they affect the world around them. English Language Arts: We will be following the NYS Common Core ELA Modules for Grade 3. The focus of Module 1 is Becoming a Close Reader and Writing to Learn: The Power of Reading. Module 2 focus is Researching to Build Knowledge and Teaching Others: Adaptations and the Wide World of Frogs & Explorers and Countries around the World. Module 3 focus is Analyzing Narrative and Supporting Opinions: Staging Stories. Module 4 is Gathering Evidence and Speaking to Others: The Role of Freshwater around the World. Social Studies is incorporated into the ELA lessons as World Communities are addressed in the choice of books used during the modules. Mathematics: We will be using the Investigations Math Program, which is a hands on approach to understanding math concepts. Investigations supports students to make sense of mathematics and learn that they can be mathematical thinkers. This allows the range of learners to engage in the understanding at mathematics. The focus is on computational fluency, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, data, measurement, early algebra, fractions, and geometry. This program is "intentionally designed to promote a deep understanding of mathematics and develop mathematically proficient students who can think, reason, model and solve problems." (Standards for Mathematical Practices in Investigations, pg. 6) This program is aligned with the NYS Common Core Mathematics Standards. Social Studies: The focus in Grade 3 is around World Communities, which is integrated into the literature of the ELA curriculum. Students will be reading literature about cultures of Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. Students will also be responsible for sharing current events. Science: We will be following the Next Generation Science Standards. In Physical Science we will focus on Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions. In Life Science we will focus on Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes. Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics, Hereditary: Inheritance and Variation of Traits, Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity. In Earth Science, we will focus on Earth's Systems and Earth and Human Activity. Religion: We will be working with the We Believe curriculum with supplemental material. The students will be learning the Apostles' Creed, and Stations of the Cross. Handwriting: We will be working with the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting books for Grade 3. |
In 4th Grade, the students are asked to flex their critical thinking skills and expand their ability to gather information from a variety of sources. We are able to talk about real world issues and develop problem-solving skills.

Module 2 focuses on Researching to Build Knowledge and Teaching Others: Interdependent Roles in Colonial Times. Module 3 focuses on Considering Perspectives and Supporting Opinions: Simple Machines and Roles during the Revolutionary War. Module 4 focuses on Gathering Evidence and Speaking to Others: the Leadership of Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and DeWitt Clinton. Mathematics: We will be using the Investigations Math Program, which is a hands on approach to understanding math concepts. Investigations supports students to make sense of mathematics and learn that they can be mathematical thinkers. This allows the range of learners to engage in the understanding at mathematics. In Life Science, we will focus on Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity, and Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes. In Earth Science, we will focus on Earth's Place in the Universe, Earth's Systems, and Earth and Human Activity. Religion:We will be working with the We Believe curriculum with supplemental material. The students will be learning the Mysteries of the Rosary, Nicene Creed, Hail Holy Queen, and the Prayer of St. Francis. Handwriting: We will be working with the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting books for Grade 4. |
